Ruaha National Park is the 2nd largest national park in Tanzania. The addition of the Usangu Game Reserve and other important wetlands to the park in 2008 increased its size to about 20,226 square km, making it the 2nd largest park in Tanzania and East Africa.
The name of the park is derived from the Great Ruaha River, which flows along its southeastern margin and is the focus for game-viewing. Ruaha is situated in central Tanzania about 130km west of Iringa. The park can be reached by car, 12hrs (during dry season) from Dar es salaam, 5 hours from Mikumi National Park.
There are two airstrips – Msembe airstrip and Jongomeru Airstrip. Ruaha is home of Hippos, Crocodiles, Waterbucks, Buffalo, Leopard, Hyena, Wild dogs, Jackals, Lions, Antelope species such as Kudu, Impala, Sable antelope, Roan antelope, Grant gazelle, tiny Dik-dik along with Giraffe, Zebra, Warthogs, Mongoose, Porcupine, Wildcat, Civet and an astonishing 465 species of bird have been recorded in the park.
